Where should you go for a family vacation in the Alps?

‍

In La Rosière, Megève, and Val Thorens, three establishments welcome guests of all ages with the same care, though each in its own way.

When it comes to family vacations, we often focus on keeping the kids happy, forgetting that parents deserve some time to themselves, too. What makes the difference? A hotel that knows how to step in—with a supervised kids’ club at the end of the day or a special dinner for the kids that gives parents time for a romantic dinner for two before the whole family gets back together.

In La Rosière: I.L.Y Hotels, a family-run hotel straddling France and Italy

At the foot of the slopes in La Rosière, a resort with the “Famille Plus” certification, the 4-star I.L.Y Hotels has made this balance between shared moments and personal time the very essence of the hotel, whose name stands for “I Love You.” In the morning, the whole family straps on their skis in the ski room to explore a ski area featuring 83 runs spanning nearly 156 kilometers. In the afternoon, the little ones discover the joys of skiing and perfect their first snowplow turns with instructors from the ESF or Evolution2—lessons that the I.L.Y. concierge service handles booking. During school breaks, the House of Kids, the hotel’s kids’ club, also welcomes children ages 4–12 from 3:00 PM to 10:30 PM, with a snack included. Parents can take this opportunity to treat themselves to some wellness time at the 420-square-meter NUXE spa, featuring a 16-meter pool and an outdoor hot tub overlooking the mountain peaks. In the evening, there are two options: a romantic dinner for two at Bonami, while the children eat with the activity leaders, or a family evening enjoying fondue at Mazot, the hotel’s second restaurant.

Among the hotel’s 69 rooms and suites, several layouts allow families to strike a balance between shared spaces and privacy. The twelve 58-square-meter Family Suites feature a separate master bedroom from the children’s room, which is furnished with bunk beds. The Family Quadruple Suite, meanwhile, offers the comfort of two connecting rooms, each with its own bathroom. In every case, a small gift awaits the children upon their arrival.

In Megève: Les Chalets du Mont d’Arbois—A Family Story

Perched on the hills above Megève, this 5-star spa hotel has been owned by the Rothschild family for nearly a century. Its rooms are spread across three chalets named Ève, Noémie, and Alice, after the three daughters of Benjamin and Ariane de Rothschild.

Children have their own Kids Corner and a special menu at the Héritage restaurant, while parents treat themselves to some downtime at the Susanne Kaufmann spa. Young and old alike can also enjoy the heated pool, which opens onto the outdoors with a view of the mountain peaks.

In Val Thorens: Altapura—family skiing right from the hotel

Located at an altitude of 2,300 meters, this 5-star hotel has been named the best ski hotel in France several times at the World Ski Awards. You can put on your skis right outside the hotel, and most of the rooms overlook the slopes.

Starting at age 3, children can enjoy the kids’ club, complete with foosball and arcade games, while parents check out the spa’s ice cave. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the pool is reserved for adults, before a family dinner at La Laiterie featuring a Savoyard fondue made with cheeses from a local cheese refiner. From one resort to the next, the fondest memories are forged in this balance between shared family fun and moments each person takes for themselves, according to their own desires.
